Doty Middle School worker honored

DOWNEY – Joe Valdivia, a longtime utility worker at Doty Middle School, was honored with the Downey Unified School District’s Vision Award on June 3 for “maintaining the facilities at Doty Middle School to the absolute highest degree possible, with safety and cleanliness held as essential priorities for students and staff.” During his 21 years at Doty (previously known as East Middle School), Valdivia has twice receive a written commendation from the superintendent for his dedication to keeping the campus clean and “looking excellent.”

On a recent visit to the campus, school board members Barbara Samperi and Nancy Swenson remarked on how nice the campus appeared.

“The Downey Unified School District is fortunate, and Doty Middle School is blessed, to have a man like Mr. Valdivia as part of our team,” said Doty Principal Brent Shubin.

In addition to the maintenance work, Valdivia, an accomplished guitar player, began a Guitar Club on campus six years ago. There is currently a Beginner and Advanced Guitar Club, which performs each year at the Downey Theatre along with the band and choir.

Valdivia volunteers two days a week to instruct students and even staff members on the fine art of picking and strumming the guitar.

Valdivia is also a former U.S. Marine, having served during the Vietnam War.
