After tough loss, Vikings hope to rebound in Hawai'i
DOWNEY - The Downey High School football team traveled to Newport Beach last Friday night to play a highly-ranked Corona del Mar team (59th in the nation and 15th in the state) and were defeated 57-20.
In the Downey/Corona del Mar game the Vikings found themselves down early. The Vikings trailed 7-0 at the end of the first quarter but saw a Sea King team explode for 28 points in the second quarter. Downey trailed 35-7 going into the locker room at halftime.
Corona del Mar continued the third quarter where they left off in the second quarter by outscoring Downey 22-6. The Sea Kings led 57-14 at the end of the third quarter. The Vikings managed to outscore Corona del Mar 6-0 in the fourth quarter but lost the game 57-20.
Viking starting quarterback Chris Hernandez completed 7/15 pass attempts for 111 yards and one touchdown. Hernandez also had two interceptions and finished the game with a quarterback rating of 54.4. Backup Viking quarterback Pedro De and a completed 7/9 pass attempts for 94 yards and one touchdown. De Anda’s quarterback rating was 147.5.
Running back(s) Jaden Allen carried the ball 15 times for 89 yards and Mateo Rico carried the ball 15 times for 89 yards. Issiah Apodaca led the Viking receiving corps with six catches for 73 yards. Jayden Hollis had one reception for 18 yards and a touchdown and Kevin Caldwell had one reception for 36 yards and a touchdown.
The Viking defense was led by Aiden Chapman’s six solo tackles, Alex Rodriguez’s three solo and three assisted tackles and Daniel Mena’s one solo and five assisted tackles.
The Vikings look to rebound later today against Kapolei of Hawai’i and hope to pick up their first win in Hawai’i. The Vikings lost last year’s game at Downey 23-14.
WARREN FOOTBALL: The Warren High School football team traveled to Long Beach Poly last Friday night for a scrimmage against the Jackrabbits. The two teams scrimmaged against each other in preparation for their respective league openers.
Long Beach Poly will be opening up against Punahou of Honolulu, Hawai’i tomorrow night at Moorpark College, and the Bears will be traveling to historic Clark Avenue Field on the campus at St. Anthony’s of Long Beach tonight.
The scrimmage proved a valuable tune-up for both teams as players were given a last-minute opportunity to earn more playing time and for coaching staffs to fine-tune their respective teams and make any last-minute adjustments.
Both teams are looking forward to the start of their 2019 football season.
WARREN GIRLS’ TENNIS: The Warren High School girls’ tennis team currently has a 1-0 record. The Bears defeated Santa Fe at Warren 9-9 (criteria decision) on Tuesday. Warren hosted Long Beach Millikan yesterday (score unavailable at press time), will travel to Whitney High School of Cerritos next Tuesday and will travel to Lakewood next Thursday.
Warren will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host Paramount at Warren on Sept. 24 and when they host cross-town rival Downey at Warren on Sept. 27.
The Bears finished last season with an overall record of 15-3 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 12-0. Warren was defeated by the Archer School for Girls of Los Angeles in the second round of C.I.F. postseason play 14-4.
DOWNEY GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL: The Downey High School girls’ volleyball team currently has a record of 2-1. The Lady Vikings hosted a tournament at Downey High School last Saturday, Aug. 17, and finished with a record of 1-1. Downey was defeated in their first game by Burbank Burroughs 3-0 and defeated South El Monte in the second game of their tournament 3-0.
Downey competed in the Lakewood Moulten Tournament this past weekend and defeated Monrovia in three sets 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16. The Lady Vikings traveled to Garden Grove earlier this week but there was no result available at press time.
Downey’s schedule will have the Lady Vikings traveling to Marina to face the Marina Lady Vikings on Sept. 10, and are also scheduled to play at Paramount on Sept. 17 and at cross-town rival Warren on Sept. 26.
Downey finished last season with an overall record of 17-11 and a San Gabriel Valley League record of 9-1. The Lady Vikings were co-league champions with Gahr (9-1). Downey was defeated by Xavier Prep of Palm Desert 3-0 in the third round of the C.I.F Division 4 playoffs.
Coach McCarthy, his players and staff are all looking to have a strong season and once again compete for a league championship and deeper run in C.I.F. postseason play.
WARREN GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL: The Warren High School girls’ volleyball team currently has a record of 1-1. The Lady Bears were
defeated by Norwalk at Warren on Tuesday, Aug. 20 in their first game 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 22-
25 and 15-13) and defeated Pioneer at Warren on Thursday, Aug. 22 in their second game 3-0
(individual set results unavailable at press time).
Warren played Bellflower on Tuesday at Warren, and Valley Christian yesterday at Warren. Both
scores were unavailable at press time. The Lady Bears are also scheduled to play Schurr at Schurr on
Tuesday, Sept. 3, will host El Rancho at Warren on Thursday, Sept. 5, will host Cerritos at
Warren on Tuesday, Sept. 10 and will begin San Gabriel Valley League play when they host
Dominguez at Warren on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The first of two cross-town rivalry games against Downey will be held at Warren on Thursday,
Sept. 26 and the second game against Downey at Downey will be held on Friday, Oct. 4.
Warren finished last season with an overall record of 7-8 and a San Gabriel Valley League record
of 5-5. The Lady Bears did not qualify for postseason play last season.
