City Council OK's parking district on Baysinger Street
DOWNEY — The Downey City Council voted Tuesday to implement a new preferential parking district on the north and south sides of Baysinger Street, between Vultee and Haledon avenues.
The zone comes at the request of residents of the neighborhood who say they have been negatively impacted by overflowing on-street parking from nearby apartment buildings on Florence Avenue.
According to city staff’s report, there are 61 on-street spaces on Baysinger Street, 38 of which will be impacted by the zone.
On June 15 and 16, 2023, Downey police conducted a license plate survey between the hours of 2-6 am, within the boundaries of the proposed zone. Results found that on June 15, 34 spots were occupied, 26 of which by non-residents, and 33 spots were occupied on June 16, 16 by non-residents.
With the approval, 50% of residents must apply for parking permits within 60 days, at which point signs restricting parking between 2-6 am with an exemption for permitted vehicles will be posted. Permits will be purchasable for $50 annually.
If 50% of residents do not purchase permits, then the preferential parking permit district could be repealed.
