DOWNEY — Downey City Council District 3 candidate Dorothy Pemberton reported receiving “overwhelming support” after knocking on nearly 1,000 doors in the early start of her campaign.

Pemberton was the leader of the effort to recall former councilwoman Catherine Alvarez.

Among Pemberton’s supporters is former mayor Rick Rodriguez, who has helped her canvass District 3 neighborhoods.

“Dorothy is uniquely qualified to serve all Downey residents,” Rodriguez said. “She has been involved in the community for many years and is now ready to give back at a larger scale.”

Pemberton said she has knocked on 931 doors so far as part of her grassroots campaign. Many residents reported recognizing Pemberton from the recall drive and her community service dating back several decades.

Retired Downey police captain Mark McDaniel endorsed Pemberton, praising her “passion for public service and deep understanding of local issues that have earned her widespread respect.”

“Dorothy understands what our Downey Police Department needs to keep our families safe,” McDaniel said. “She has dedicated countless hours working with Gangs Out of Downey and the Citizens Academy over the years. As former president of GOOD, I should know; she was by my side and I could always count on Dorothy being there. Supporting Dorothy is suporting law enforcement.”
