Downey City Council to select mayor and mayor pro tem for 2025
The Downey City Council is set to convene next week to select its mayor and mayor pro tem for 2025, a significant annual tradition that rotates leadership among the five-member council.
The meeting is expected to conclude with Mayor Pro Tem Hector Sosa succeeding Mayor Mario Trujillo to become Downey’s next mayor.
While Sosa’s ascension appears straightforward, the council faces a less predictable decision in choosing the next mayor pro tem.
Councilmembers Claudia M. Frometa, Horacio Ortiz, and Dorothy Pemberton are all eligible for the role.
Frometa, who has two years remaining in her term, has already served as mayor twice, in 2021 and 2023.
Ortiz and Pemberton were both re-elected to their seats in November after serving one-year terms due to vacancies on the council.
The mayor pro tem role serves as the city’s ceremonial leader in the mayor’s absence and prepares to potentially become mayor in the following year.
The council meeting, open to the public, will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Downey City Hall.
