Fourth of July reports from Downey Police and Fire
DOWNEY - Downey Fire responded to fewer fire incidents this Independence Day compared to previous years, officials have said.
According to Downey Fire Assistant Chief Hildebrand, the department to seven dumpster fires, many attributed to firework use and improper disposal. Downey’s communication center, which also provides dispatch services for the cities of Compton and Santa Fe Springs, dispatched nearly 100 calls.
Downey did not respond to any structure fires or fireworks related injuries.
Downey Police gave 34 citations connected to fireworks related calls between the hours of 6 pm and 2 am, 33 of which for possession and / or use of illegal fireworks, according to Downey Police Captain Brian Baker. In that same timeframe, Downey PD received 109 calls for service related to the use of fireworks.
