Downey police won’t enforce stay-at-home orders

DOWNEY – Downey Police will not be actively enforcing the newest stay-at-home order, according to officials.

As the nation continues to grapple with the deadly coronavirus, a fresh batch of LA County mandates and restrictions went into effect on Monday.

Included in the latest protocols is the prohibition of all public gatherings with individuals not part of your household (except for religious services and protests, which are covered by constitutional rights) and the re-closure of in-person dining for restaurants.

However, it is unlikely that Downey residents will be cited by local police for any infractions.

According to Mayor Blanca Pacheco, it is simply too difficult for Downey Police to determine who is part of a single household to effectively enforce the new mandates.

“We’re hoping residents will comply on their own,” said Pacheco.

Police Chief Dean Milligan said that police would respond to any call received and assess from that point but indicated that citations would come more at the discretion of the county Health Department.
