Fireworks stands open Thursday
DOWNEY - Residents wishing to purchase safe and sane fireworks will be able to choose from 17 vendors starting Thursday.
Vendors this year include:
- Downey Better Baseball (251 Stonewood St., in the south parking lot of the Stonewood mall)
- Downey HS Football (13525 Lakewood Blvd., in the Food 4 Less parking lot)
- Calvary Chapel (12808 Woodruff Ave., in the Calvary Chapel parking lot)
- Desert Reign Church (7915 Florence Ave., in the south parking lot of CVS y Mas)
- Downey Free Methodist Church (9245 Florence Ave., in the Downey Free Methodist church parking lot
- Downey High School Band Boosters (8320 Firestone Blvd., in the Grocery Outlet parking lot)
- Dios Con Nosotros (7502 Florence Ave., in the Del Rio Lanes parking lot)
- Job’s Daughters Downey (10231 Lakewood Blvd., in the Pep Boys parking lot)
- St. Pius X Mathias Academy (7851 Gardendale Ave., in the high school parking lot)
- Warren HS Music Parent Association (9001 Apollo Way, in the Walmart parking lot)
- Downey Rose Float Association (9200 Lakewood Blvd., in the Ralphs parking lot)
- Warren High School Athletic Department (8626 Firestone Blvd., in the Ralphs parking lot)
- West Downey Little League (7399 Stewart and Gray Rd., in the Old River Liquor parking lot)
- St. Raymond Catholic Church (12348 Paramount Blvd., in the church parking lot)
- Elks Lodge #2020 (11233 Woodruff Ave. (in the Elks Lodge parking lot).
The discharge of “safe and sane” fireworks is currently only permitted on July 4 from 3pm to 10 pm, in the presence of a responsible adult. Only those aged 18 and older are permitted to possess any fireworks.
Fines for violations can be as high as $3000, depending on type and number of offenses. Property owners can be held responsible for illegal fireworks on their property or illegal fireworks in the possession of others on their property.
On the Independence Day holiday, Downey Police Department will have increased staffing, including one lieutenant, eight police officers, and three motorcycle officers with extended hours to 10 pm. Downey Fire Department will also utilize an additional fire engine, including one captain, one engineer, and two firefighter/paramedics.
Police will also be utilizing unmarked police vehicles to aid in enforcement.
