Letter to the Editor: Friendly teens

Dear Editor

Some mornings, I walk in the neighborhood near Downey High School, and I’ve noticed over the years that the students are pleasantly considerate and kind.

For example, when I pass by students, I usually say hello or good morning, and they always make eye contact, smile and say hello or good morning back. They actually look pleased too. Like it’s meaningful that someone is acknowledging them. Furthermore, partial conversations I’ve overheard when I pass a group of students are mostly pleasant and good natured. Especially during the holidays and just before vacations. The students look excited and happy with their gifts in hand ready to make someone happy with their thoughtfulness. It’s super nice to see, and I feel humbled by their kindness.

Years ago, on one of my walks near the school, I saw a group of Downey High School boys running on the sidewalk towards me. I stepped aside to give them space, and every single runner said “thank you” to me when they passed. It caught my attention as to how well mannered these boys were. After that, I just kept noticing more positive behavior, and consistently throughout the years, every time a group of students runs past me, each runner still says, “thank you.” It makes me smile.

Undoubtedly, positive behavior may be expected by many, but I can’t help but be impressed with these students. No doubt I would probably notice negative behaviors if I saw it, but overall, I’m just more impressed by the student’s consistent positive behaviors. Maybe it’s the parents doing their job or the school and the community helping students feel safe in our community or a combination of things, but it’s definitely worthy of praise.

I would like for the Downey High School students to know their positive behavior in our community is recognized and appreciated. Hopefully, others in our community have noticed similar positive behaviors.

Now that it’s summer, there aren’t many students at the High School, and I appreciate that there is less vehicle traffic, Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing the students again in the fall. I hope they have a great summer.
