Roybal-Allard: Alex Padilla's appointment to US Senate a 'historic achivement'
DOWNEY — Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard on Tuesday called Alex Padilla’s appointment to the U.S. Senate a “historic achievement.”
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced today he had chosen Padilla, who currently serves as California’s Secretary of State, to fill Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' Senate seat.
Below is Roybal-Allard’s full statement:
“I am thrilled with Governor Newsom’s decision to appoint California’s Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, to serve as United States Senator from California. Secretary Padilla will serve for the remainder of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ term in the United States Senate.
“Secretary Padilla is an Angeleno through and through, and I am proud to have watched his career as he has devoted himself in service to the people of California. From his role on the Los Angeles City Council as a member and later as president, to his work in the California State Senate, and finally as our Secretary of State, Alex has shown that he is a fierce advocate for Californians. Alex is a role model to so many Latino youth in our state, and I know that his appointment as our senator will show every Latino child that anything is possible in our nation.
“I know that Alex will take his love of our state to the U.S. Senate, and I look forward to working with him in the 117th Congress. I congratulate his family, his wife Angela, and his three sons on this historic achievement.”
