TLC wins Golden Bell Award

DOWNEY – The Downey Unified School District’s True Lasting Connections (TLC) Family Resource Center is being honored with a Golden Bell Award, a leading educational honor in California sponsored by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). Celebrating its 35th year, the Golden Bell Award promotes excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs, and superiority practices in school districts and throughout California.

The Golden Bell Award honors exemplary organizations in 19 major categories that highlight the best practices to support effective governance, teaching and student learning.

The Downey Unified School District will receive its award at a recognition ceremony to be held Dec. 16 at CSBA’s annual Education Conference and Trade Show in San Francisco.

The CSBA is the non-profit education association representing the elected officials who govern public school districts. With a membership of nearly 1,000 educational agencies statewide, CSBA brings togther school district governing boards to advocate for effective policies that advance the education and well-being of the state’s more than 6 million school-age children.

The mission of TLC is to create a “true lasting connection” between the community and DUSD to ensure healthy and successful futures for all children. TLC provides an array of heatlh and social services to students in need, including health insurance enrollment, counseling, vision exams and health check-ups.

“Not only has the Downey Unified School District been changed by TLC, but the Downey community as a whole has truly been transformed from the programs that they provide to our students and their families,” said William Gutierrez, president of the Downey board of education.
